Jordan Bardella's demonstrative zeal is part of the long tradition of denialism and xenophobia of his party, the National Rally (formerly the National Front).
As early as 1987, the founding father of the party, Jean-Marie Le Pen, described the gas chambers as a mere detail of the Second World War. He was also convicted several times for denying crimes against humanity.
His daughter, Marine Le Pen, was no exception when she attended the Akademikerball in 2012, the ball of pan-Germanic and nationalist societies in Vienna. Her close friends (and campaign staff) are Frédéric Chatillon and Axel Louveteaux. Members of the far-right student union GUD, they still enjoy themed parties (Nazi salutes and swastikas are commonplace).
Today, the party can also count on its numerous candidates in the local elections. Through both their racist outbursts and their incompetence, they keep the party's flame alive like a spark in the gutter of ideas.
